Singing for the Archbishop of Canterbury

The New Chamber Singers is a non-sectarian choir. It is true that it has many practicing Anglicans and Catholics amongst its members, including some who have taken holy orders. It is also true that it holds its rehearsals and most of its concerts in the Anglican All Saints Church in Rome, and several members of the choir are also members of the choirs of their local churches. However, the choir sings both sacred and non-sacred music and is in no way a church choir, for All Saints, or any other church.

However, it was with great pleasure that all members of the choir agreed to augment the church choir of All Saints Church on the occasion of the visit of the newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, to Rome.

The purpose of the visit was to promote the ecumenical movement which is bringing the Anglican and Catholic churches ever closer together, and was a truly historic one, as it was the first ever visit of a lady Archbishop of Canterbury to Rome for an audience with His Holiness the Pope.

The choir supported the All Saints church choir to sing Holy Communion on the morning of Sunday 26 April 2026, and then to sing Choral Evensong in the Jesuit Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola on Monday 27th. Both events were conducted by Joey Draycott, with Gabriele Catalucci at the organ. Some members of the choir also sang Choral Evensong at St. Paul’s Within the Walls on the Sunday evening.

Here are some pictures of the events, with a video at the bottom:
